Chapter 13

Corpse comparison

Dimitri stood back from Doctor and Mrs. Simister’s corpses. Several feet back, not looking keen on getting closer, even though he’d carried Mrs. Simister down the stairs into the cellar not five minutes ago. We’d been joined by Zandra and Sage, although Sage was almost asleep on her feet, barely able to keep her eyes open as she yawned, smacked her lips together, and shuffled about.

“Take a closer look at the bodies,” I said to Dimitri. “They won’t bite. Don’t you want to study the symbols? They look almost identical.”

“No, thank you. There’s only so much corpse exposure I can handle in one day,” Dimitri replied, his face the wrong shade of gone-off milk.

“The deaths must be connected, and these symbols connect them,” I said.

Sage yawned loudly. “How are gremlins sneaking about this place without us seeing them?”

I had no answer to that question. The silence from the others showed they were just as stumped.

“It’s not only in here that sneaky magic is a problem,” Dimitri said. “If we don’t get a handle on this, Crimson Cove will become a shadow of the place you remember.”

“We’re not letting that happen,” Sage grumbled. “My witch loves this town.”

“Almost as much as she loves me.” Ember popped into view.

Sage hissed at him. “Stop doing that, you little creep. It’s unsettling the way you appear out of nowhere, like some unwelcome furry fiend. Go away!”

“You’re Vorana’s familiar, is that right?” Dimitri asked Ember.

“No! Vorana is my witch. I’m the only familiar bonded to her. This fluffy jerk has made himself an unwelcome addition to the household. We don’t want him.” Sage growled at Ember.

“Sage, that’s a terrible thing to say. I was openly invited into your home, and now you’re not happy because Vorana prefers me to you.” Ember strutted over to the bodies and sniffed them. “Have you figured out what happened? I’m happy to help if you’re stuck. I can sneak in and out of places and listen in.”

“So you can feed us lies,” Sage said. “If you must be here, keep your opinions to yourself.”

“If you don’t want me, I can sit with Vorana. I’ll tell her you were mean to me again. She won’t want you anymore if you keep being so spiteful.”

“Stop antagonizing each other,” I said. “Put your personal issues to one side and focus on the murders. If we don’t figure out what’s going on soon, none of us will have any homes to return to.”

Ember sniffed. “It’s all Sage’s fault we argue.”

I stomped over to the feisty kitten and boxed his ears. “Untrue. You’re provoking her. Sage thought she was doing a good thing by inviting you into the family, but you’ve exploited her kind nature. Vorana and Sage are wonderful together. Stop messing with that relationship, or you’ll regret it.”

“Did you hear that?” Ember’s wide eyes turned to Dimitri. “I just got threatened. That’s a crime, isn’t it?”

Dimitri’s forehead wrinkled, and confusion crossed his face. “I’m not sure what’s going on here.”

“Rest assured, it has nothing to do with this investigation.
